Viasat statement regarding video streaming
Screen size, screen type, how much and what kind of data you plan to stream greatly effects your data usage.
In general, satellite internet is not an ideal solution for people who want to replace their cable TV with full-time video streaming. However, Viasat Internet does work for families who want to stream video.
Here’s some information to help you understand what’s involved.
Understanding resolution:
Viasat Unlimited internet plans deliver different levels of streaming video quality (expressed as resolution). There are many factors involved in determining video resolution, including the playback settings you configure on each video streaming service.
The sharpness of your image depends on both the resolution and the size of your display screen. Put simply: small screens look fine with lower resolution, and larger screens require a higher resolution to look good. Also: the higher the video resolution, the more data you need. The lower the resolution, the less data you need.
Screen resolution is expressed as the number of pixels your screen can display horizontally and -vertically. For example, 1920 x 1080 pixels, or 1080p, is known as full high definition (HD).
• Low resolution (360p) is best for small devices such as smart phones and tablets.
• DVD quality (480p) is best for medium devices such as computer monitors, laptop monitors and TV's.
• HD quality (720p) is best for large devices such as large screen TV's or projectors.
• Full HD quality (1080p) is best for large devices such as large screen TV's or projectors.
• Ultra HD (4K) is the highest cinematic standard for video resolution, designed for wide screens and digitally produced content.
VIDEO RESOLUTION DESCRIPTION
360p Low-resolution, best viewed on small screens such as phones or tablets
480p DVD-quality, best viewed on phones, tablets, laptops, and small-screen TVs
720p HD-quality, looks good on most screen sizes
1080p Full HD video, looks good on even the largest screen sizes (including projectors)
4K Ultra HD video, is the highest cinematic standard for video resolution, designed for wide screens in theaters and digitally produced content.
Understanding Data
Common data measurements are Gigabytes (GB), Megabytes (MB), and Kilobytes (KB). 1 GB is roughly one billion bytes, or about one thousand Megabytes (MB).
1 GB 1,024 MB of data
1 MB 1,024 KB of data
1 KB 1,024 bytes of data
With 1 GB of data, you should be able to visit 3,000 new webpages, send approximately 20,000 text-only emails, listen to about 24 hours of music streaming on services like Spotify (at 96 kbps).
Data usage explained
Viasat Unlimited data internet plans come with an Unlimited amount of High-Speed data*.
• Unlimited data plans include a set monthly amount of High-Speed Data when you should experience downloads and uploads up to the advertised speed for your plan.
• * Unlimited Standard Data kicks in after you’ve used up your monthly High-Speed Data. Unlimited Standard Data is prioritized behind other customers during times of network congestion resulting in slower speeds but should allow you to do essential, everyday activities such as web browsing, audio streaming, social media and email.
Your monthly data usage is measured by the number of bytes transferred, or used, between your network and the Internet.
Your monthly data measurement reset date is the same as your monthly billing statement date. On that day, your data usage is reset to 0 and a new measurement period begins.
We offer a variety of resources to help you manage your data usage for the best value and experience. These include Viasat Shield, My Viasat mobile app, and My Viasat web.
* If your data usage is trending to exceed the "typical usage" of a residential user on our network, you may have reduced priority during times of network congestion resulting in slower speeds. Typical usage currently means usage trending to not exceed 850 GBs in any 30-day period. The typical usage amount will vary based on network demands.
